Symphonia for South Africa, through its flagship programme, Partners for Possibility, develops conscious and effective leaders through cross-sectoral collaborations that are designed to build leadership capability and capacity through participation in the huge challenges facing South African schools. Through this process, people are inspired to let their light shine and work together to co-create a more just, equitable, caring and joyful future in South Africa.

Symphonia for South Africa’s contribution to a flourishing South Africa is to help develop the three components identified in the National Development Plan (NDP) as vital ingredients to its success: active citizenship, leadership and a capable state.

Its overarching purpose to is cultivate community, ignite possibility and activate leadership by encouraging South Africans to be a contribution, so that everyone works together to co-create a more just, equitable, caring and joyful future in South Africa.

It was the reason that Partners for Possibility (PfP), Symphonia for SA’s flagship programme, was created. The PfP programme reflects the NDP’s vision for education through its imperative to reduce inequality in education so that all children benefit from a high quality education.

Partners for Possibility

The award-wining, internationally acclaimed PfP programme develops conscious and effective leaders through cross-sectoral collaborations that are designed to build leadership capability and capacity through participation in the huge challenges facing South African schools.

The programme does this by partnering school principals and business leaders who embark on a facilitated leadership development process where they both participate in formal leadership training while working together to address challenges in their school. This process inspires PfP participants to create sustainable impact and change that goes far beyond the boardroom or classroom. The effects of this programme ripple out, reaching thousands of individuals in multiple communities, making a tangible difference in South Africa

From Grassy Park to Letsitele, over 1184 school principals to date, most of whom have received no previous leadership or management training, have been able to strengthen their leadership and management capacity.

Through partnership with the business leaders, principals are equipped with the skills and knowledge to lead change and mobilise communities around their schools. The partners are asked to effect change collaboratively at four levels in the school environment, namely the school principal, the School Management Team, the teachers and the parents and community.

The programme engages business leaders in a challenging hands-on experience within an education environment that is fraught with complex challenges that require skilled leadership.

They learn to work in environments outside their comfort zones where the challenges are huge, the resources scarce, and where they have no authority.

PfP ultimately generates important social value by helping to break down cultural, racial and gender barriers within South African society by exposing participants to communities with whom they would not normally engage.
