Kanyisa did her undergraduate studies at Rhodes University, qualifying in a Bachelor of Social Science. She also holds a Masters degree in Business Administration and a Postgraduate Diploma in Futures Studies through the University of Stellenbosch Business School.

She has more than 20 years of work experience in the Development sector, particularly education, half of which has been in various leadership positions. She is currently A Division Head at the National Education Collaboration Trust, called Systems Capacity Support and Advisory.
