Established in 2014, Phakamani Young Minds Academy is a youth-led non-profit organization providing academic assistance, support and mentorship to learners throughout their schooling career - from their foundation phase up to their final years of secondary schooling.

We address the educational gap among disadvantaged learners as well as enhancing content knowledge through reinforcing work done by educators in classrooms. Supporting learners with little help at home by the provision of extra lessons, homework supervision, exam preparations, mentorship, career guidance and extra mural activities to enhance personal development and learning in a safe environment.

In Grade 12, we ensure learners apply to at least three post-school opportunities, so they enrol in tertiary institutions, learnerships or jobs the following year, so they have somewhere to go when they finish school. When these learners have their matric results, we then make sure that they are actually placed in a post-school opportunity and encourage them to return as tutors and help others. Our ultimate goal as an organisation through our services is to produce prominent members of the society and young people lifting themselves out of the cycle of poverty.

Our work is underpinned by the following values SEQI

  • Safety: Creating a safe and friendly environment that promotes the protection of all our beneficiaries from violence.
  • Empowerment: we find creative way of helping the youth resolve their own problems and better contribute to society as a whole.
  • Quality Services: We determine our services based on the needs of our beneficiaries and the communities we serve, always striving to exceed their expectations.
  • Integrity: We believe in complete honesty in our interactions with each other, our beneficiaries, professionals and stakeholders and  treating them with dignity at all times.
